New England Patriots reportedly close to a deal with Aqib Talib

According to a report by NESN on March 10, the New England Patriots may have a shot at signing starting cornerback Aqib Talib before he hits free agency at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday (March 11).

The Patriots are reported to be “very close” to bringing back the lockdown corner who has been very influential in their defensive backfield the last couple of seasons since being brought over from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

If the Patriots are able to reach a deal and give Talib the kind of money he is asking for, they will have to outbid the Washington Redskins. Talib is looking for the kind of deal recently signed by cornerbacks Brent Grimes and Sam Shields. Grimes signed a 4-year, $32 million deal with the Miami Dolphins and Shields signed a 4-year, $39 million with the Green Bay Packers.

There is no doubt that when Aqib Talib is healthy he is one of the top cornerbacks in the league. In the last two AFC Championship games, injuries have plagued Talib and left both games early. For the New England Patriots to offer that kind of money to Talib, reliability will play a major factor.

If the Patriots cannot reach a deal for Talib, they may turn their attention to free agent cornerback Alterraun Verner. There is also a possibility that Darrelle Revis will be on the free agent market if the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are not able to trade him by Wednesday (March 12).
