The 34-year-old Carter was a defensive leader in that 20ll season that was cut short by a quad injury. He recorded 10 sacks in 14 games for the Patriots and the team is hoping he can bring leadership to a defense that have lost two of its more valuable players to season ending-injuries.
Carter’s presence and added depth at defensive end could allow the team to move Rob Ninkovich to linebacker in place of Jerod Mayo. Ninkovich has more range than linebacker Donte Hightower who looked lost in Mayo’s role in Sunday’s overtime loss against the New York Jets.
Most importantly, Carter is familiar with the defense and scheme and should be able to adjust quickly.
The Patriots have released defensive tackle Andre Neblett to make room for Carter.
In 2012 with the Oakland Raiders, Andre Carter played in 12 games and recorded 2.5 sacks.
