New discoveries at Gallery Underground and Studios tour: Sushmita Mazumdar (Photos)

Sushmita Mazumdar is a storyteller artist who has mastered bookmaking and transformed those skills into 3D painting. Professional artists may describe it as a version of bas-relief, a sculpture technique in which figures and/or other design elements are just barely more prominent than the (overall flat) background.

Like many area artists, they are active in the greater DC Metro community with involvement with a number of art organizations. Arlington Artists Alliance has attracted new participants and the introduction increases diversity in ideas, styles and shared influence.

Sushmita’s work popped in the Gallery Underground seasonal opener this spring. She is enthusiastic about her work, and her work is very different in ideas and quality workmanship.
