New cruise ships 2014: Norwegian Getaway

The newest ship for Norwegian Cruise Lines, the Norwegian Getaway, sailed out of Miami for the first time on Feb. 8, 2014. The Getaway, sister ship to last year’s Norwegian Breakaway, features 18 decks; the Illusionariumm (a dinner theater and magic show); the “Grammy Experience at Sea” with performances by Grammy nominated/winning artists, along with a music museum and exhibits of Grammy memorabilia; a waterpark with five waterslides; a giant, two-deck spa; and nightly fireworks.

The mega ship Norwegian Getaway is the ninth largest cruise ship ever built. The hull artwork was designed by South Florida Cuban American artist David “Lebo” LeBatard. The iconic art features a whimsical mermaid holding the sun, surrounded by a swirling water/cloud/sky design.

The Getaway offers 28 dining options, including Ocean Blue by Geoffrey Zakarian, and a sea-based Carlo’s Bakery from TLC’s favorite baker Buddy Valastro. The Flamingo Bar & Grill and Tropicana Room both specialize in Latin dishes.

“Legally Blonde: The Musical” is a seven-time Tony Award nominated musical and will only be performed on the Norwegian Getaway. “Wine Lovers: The Musical” is a great way to laugh it up and enjoy libations while at sea. And to keep the entertainment going, check out “Burn the Floor” ballroom musical review. This 45-minute dance extravaganza includes a hot night at the Savoy, a trip to the Latin Quarter, and ballroom dancing to sizzle the night.

With a capacity of 4,000 passengers and 1,595 crew, the Getaway will sail 7-day Eastern Caribbean cruises out of Miami.
