New Compton Mayor Aja Brown held her “Kick-Off Volunteer Meeting” to support her initiative, of having volunteers play a critical role… in making the City a better place to live and work. The evening meeting was well attended, and after introductions it was learned that many of the attendees lived and/or worked in the City, and included educators, clergy, non-profit organizations, businesses, and other concerned individuals who wanted to help Compton grow closer to a healthy community.
Mayor Brown spoke during her power point presentation, and focused on several key points:
Establish a First Source Hiring Program assuring Compton residents are trained, and given preference to construction and maintenance projects within the City, Improve Transparency by hosting a “Coffee with the Mayor” platform so that residents can receive first hand information concerning the City, Create a Community Policing Taskforce so that concerned individuals can help with prevention & intervention measures to eradicate gang violence & human trafficking within the city, also an education component to train families on such measures, and a mentoring component to target middle school male students, and focus on literacy & discipline, Beautification Component to create an outlet for residents and others to partner with local churches and clean up the city.
Establish an annual Church & Non-Profit Symposium, so that residents can learn about the various resources provided by such organizations, To revive the City’s Commissions & Block Clubs to improve the city, To establish free weekly Saturday Health & Wellness programs at local parks, to keep Compton healthy & fit, To form Business Roundtable sessions to promote collaboration between the business community, Establish a Saturday Enrichment Program at schools in Compton… to expose students to extracurricular activities, Start a Youth Sports Clinic to provide additional recreational opportunities to our children, and finally, develop a Culture & Arts Program so that artists can display their work, and display the rich culture within the city.
Mayor Brown also said that she would like to see a Museum in the City, and although there is the Tomorrow’s Aeronautical Museum-TAM located at the Compton Airport….I believe the Mayor was speaking in addition to?
Many of the above initiatives will be developed via sub-committees. Future meetings will be posted on the City’s Website, and announced at City Council Meetings. For more information contact the Mayor’s Liaison, Melissa Freeny at firstname.lastname@example.org or 310-605-5597.
