New coffee liqueur a delicious nod to Mexico

Kahlua coffee liqueur woke up my drinking taste buds a long time ago. Two of my favorite beverages – coffee and rum – etched the phrase “wow, this is good” into my cocktail psyche. Over rocks, mixed with vodka for a Black Russian, or sipped neat after dinner is like dessert in a glass.

Well, this coffee-infused sipping experience rises to another level with the launch of Patron XO Café Dark Cocoa, which combines a few other faves: High-quality Patron Silver tequila and the essence of coffee with extraordinary chocolate flavor. At first blush, these may seem odd bedfellows, but once you sample, you’ll get it. Two words: Unique and delicious.

It’s appropriate that chocolate, a word that originates in Mexico’s Aztec cuisine, melded with another uniquely Sonoran product like tequila, creates a stunning sipping new experience. The high-quality Criollo chocolate is produced in Mexico’s Tabasco region, while the coffee comes from the Mexican states of Veracruz and Chiapas.

Distilled at 60 proof, Patron XO Café Dark Cocoa is characterized by its deep, dark brown color, and an aroma of fresh coffee balanced with cocoa. The taste is dry, not sweet like many other coffee liqueurs, like Kahlua. It reminds me more of a dry Spanish sherry in that regard, only with tequila and cocoa/coffee notes. The finish is smooth and dry.

Throw your guests for a curve ball this weekend and pour this in sherry glasses before dinner. The night will be off and running soon thereafter. Available at Total Wine and More, BevMo and AJ’s Fine Foods. $30. Cheers!
