Mayor Daley announces new ordinance July 1, 2010 AP/Spencer Green
Just 96 hours after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled Chicago's handgun ban was illegal, Chicago's City Council has approved a less restrictive set of gun restrictions, one that will allow Chicagoans to legally own handguns and other firearms.
With a 45 - 0 vote, according to the Chicago Tribune, the council approved an ordinance that allows qualified adults Chicagoans to register one handgun a month. By qualified, that means an adult with no felony convictions. People with two or more drunk driving convictions would also be prohibited from owning a gun.
Guns will be allowed only within a person's home, not anywhere outside the home, and that includes yards and garages..
A firearm permit will cost $100 and a city registration fee will cost $15. Both the permit and registration will have to be renewed every three years and the fees paid again, according to a press release from the Mayor's Office.
Gun owners will also have to undergo four hours of classroom training and one hour of firing range training. The hitch here is that firing ranges, with the exception of law enforcement ranges, are banned in Chicago. So people will have to go outside the city for target training.
In line with the ban on target ranges are the ban of gun sales in Chicago. People wanting to purchase guns, legally will have to go to the suburbs.
As for transporting a gun, it will have to be kept in a case and broken down, meaning it will have to be taken apart if possible and not kept loaded. This is a clear signal to conceal/carry proponents who staged a town hall meeting in Chicago this week to push for that right. Other provisions of the ordinance people who now own guns illegally will have 90 days to register their weapons without fear of penalty.
Mayor Daley released details of the proposal yesterday and pro-gun advocates were quick to say that lawsuits will be filed to claim this latest gun ordinance is too restrictive and therefore also illegal. Click here to link to Mayor Daley's press release on the gun ordinance.

Chicagos city council are idiots. Gun control is a Federal law just like immigration law that you've been bad mouthing. Your new law will be challenged and FAIL!
They must have also banned brains for Chicago council members...
