It was a bad Sunday for champions around the world of sports. Over in the NFL, the defending Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers were upset by the Kansas City Chiefs. It ended their undefeated season. And that madness carried over to the WWE "TLC: Tables, Ladders, and Chairs" pay per view on Sunday night.
Silsby, Texas native Mark Henry lost the World Heavyweight Championship to The Big Show, and Daniel Bryan walked out with the title. Did you see something wrong with that statement? Okay, let's try it this way - Daniel Bryan, yes THAT Daniel Bryan, is your NEW World Heavyweight Champion. The Ring of Honor transplant cashed in his Money In The Bank briefcase that he won earlier this year and pinned an unsuspecting Big Show just moments after the 7-foot giant had defeated Mark Henry for the very same title.
Before Big Show could celebrate dethroning the man that had been responisble for him being on the shelf recently, disaster struck. After the match, Henry got back to his feet and scrambled Big Show with a chair. He then DDT'd Show head-first into the chair. With the new champion down, fans began clamoring for Daniel Bryan. The former United States Champion dashed to the ring with his MITB briefcase in hand. He handed it to the referee and dove on top of Big Show. Three seconds later, Daniel Bryan becomes the new World Heavyweight Champion.
Speaking of Texas natives, Houston's own Booker T returned to action at TLC as well. He was on a mission to end the reign of Intercontinental Champion Cody Rhodes. The two had been engulfed in a feud over the last couple of months, and Rhodes had been known for attacking Booker on several occasions, including the TLC event. Rhodes caught Booker twice on Sunday night, once backstage then again while Booker was making his way to the ring for their match. While the attacks were considered nothing more than cheap shots, it proved to be a smart play for the champion, as his signature Beautiful Disaster kick would prove to be all that the former Legacy member needed. After a second attempt of the kick, Rhodes made the cover and successfully retained the Intercontinental title.
And if you're a fan of Dolph Ziggler, the phrase "Woo woo woo, you know it!" is a painful thing to have to read right now. Ziggler got a fatal dose of the "Long Island Iced-Z" Zack Ryder tonight, as WWE's biggest YouTube sensation walked out with the United States Championship. After John Cena forfeited a golden opportunity at the WWE Championship recently so Ryder could have a match with Ziggler, Ryder cashed in big as he used his Rough Ryder on Ziggler to win the match and become champion.
And CM Punk is still your WWE Champion after a brutal TLC match. He had to defend the gold against The Miz and Alberto Del Rio, both being former WWE Champions. An interference from Del Rio's personal ring announcer Ricardo Rodriguez and being handcuffed to the ring ropes by The Miz wasn't even enough to keep the Straight Edge Superstar from retaining his title. After being handcuffed, Punk used a moment of absolute brilliance to remove the turnbuckle to free himself. From there, he was able to get to the ladder and pull down the gold, and walking out of TLC still the WWE Champion.
