With breast cancer in women and men increasing, some may have heard there is now a treatment that requires one step, done during surgery, to combat certain breast cancers.
Some may have heard this breast cancer treatment referred to as ‘one and done’ leaving readers with the idea this is all there is to the treatment. However, there are other things involved.
If a person has stage 1 breast cancer, a balloon can be placed in the breast following a lumpectomy that removed the tumor. The balloon is then filled with radioactive material. This breast treatment is to take the place of the weeks of radiation treatment for breast cancer some women have experienced.
Reports indicate that cancer patients do not always complete their treatment because it takes too long, the distance to get to treatment is too far or the patient does not have the funds to continue treatment. It is hoped this simpler treatment will save more lives.
While this treatment for breast cancer is good new for some, it has not been suggested for breast cancer that is beyond stage 1.
