New Billings library opens

The new Billings Public Library opened to the public on Jan. 6, 2014. The 66,000 square foot building is located just north of the old library at 510 North Broadway in downtown Billings.

The interior of the library is a stunning piece of architecture. The exterior is relatively plain with gray walls and decorative metals bars. The interior is where the library shines.

The library is bright and open on the inside with colorful decorative structures along the walls. The first floor has a large space to return and check out books along with a large fountain and a cafe. The children's section is also located on the first floor. It is characterized by a large two story conical tower that has a skylight.

The second level holds the adult fiction and non-fiction sections as well as teen fiction. It also has a large section of computers. Like the first floor, its open spaces makes the library seem even larger than it is.

The old library building will be torn down in the spring and will be turned into a 100 space parking garden for the library. It should be completed by June.

The library's official dedication ceremony will be on Feb. 1. Later in February, the library will welcome author and illustrator Michael Berenstain and author Neil Gaiman.
