Recently I've had the chance to drink some new beers and one in particular that I was very fond of was New Belgium Brewery's 1554 Enlightened Black Ale. New Belgium is a brewery located in Fort Collins, CO and has a great line of craft beers. The story behind this beer is that it's an Ale that was popular in Belgium around 500 years ago. In 1997 New Belgium brewmasters traveled over to Belgium to retrieve this recipe that was found in an old library.
This beer has a very nice dark color due to the chocolate malts, which also gives it a sweet taste. It features one type of hops and five types of malts. This beer is very low in carbonation and has an average ABV of 5.6%. The beer is very easy to drink and can be enjoyed by all levels of beer drinkers. The sweetness can get to you the next day, so this isn't a beer you want to party with. As far as food pairing, it would match to any kind of slow cooked, smokey meat dishes. It could also be served with cheese and cured meat. Lastly it could stand alone as an after meal beer or with dessert.
