Well, Sherlockians, today is a day to celebrate: we got a sentence! The BBC released a brand-new trailer teasing what's sure to be another season of excellent television today, and the fandom that waited got an ever-so-slight new taste of the upcoming third season of Sherlock.
The 90-second BBC One trailer shows some great matched action sequences featuring each show in the network's latest slate of drama programming. There are a few fleeting shots of the Sherlock season two finale, including Sherlock falling off the top of St. Bart's Hospital, but then we finally get to see him and John together again as Sherlock says:
The thrill of the chase, the blood pumping through your veins...just the two of us against the rest of the world.
Fan excitement over this teeny snippet of new footage is palpable, even causing #Sherlock to trend worldwide on Twitter. But hey, with a wait in between seasons that has lasted this long, you can't exactly blame them.
Luckily, that's not the only Sherlock news this weekend: the highly-anticipated third season finished wrapping today and producer (and wife of Steven Moffat) Sue Vertue tweeted out a picture of the season's final clapboard just hours ago. Hopefully the completion of filming will bring us closer to a confirmed premiere date for both the U.K. and United States. A January 1, 2014 release date has been circulating for weeks now, but given the spate of rumors over the last year ranging from September 15 to Halloween, it would be wise to wait until the producers themselves confirm something.
As for the rest of the trailer, fans got a taste of several new shows, as well as the acclaimed Ripper Street, which returns for its second season. You'll also notice two Doctor Whos appearing in the promo; 10th Doctor David Tennant, who is playing a lawyer in The Escape Artist, and the newly-crowned 12th Doctor Peter Capaldi as Cardinal Richelieu in The Musketeers.
Just in case this trailer wasn't enough for your Sherlock needs, re-watch the season three teaser here.
