New ‘Battleship’ trailer looks a lot like ‘Transformers’ (video, photos)

On Dec. 9, Universal Pictures has released a new trailer, teaser poster and photos for Peter Berg’s “Battleship,” the action movie based on the Hasbro strategy game about naval combat.

This trailer is more interested in going for the big guns than it is in introducing, say, plot of the stars attached to the project, including Taylor Kitsch (“John Carter,” “Friday Night Lights”), Alexander Skarsgård (“True Blood”), Rihanna and Liam Neeson – although they all appear in it.

The aliens and an end-of-the-world storyline is really just an excuse to have lots of explosions and machines that turn into things.

At this point, it seems Universal clearly wants audiences to see “Battleship” in the light of the “Transformers” franchise, mixing equal parts nostalgia for childhood playtime with big special effects. With maybe a touch of “Independence Day,” without the humor.
