New band iconoClass makes its debut at the D-Note: a review

On December 1, four guys calling themselves "iconoClass" made their first public appearance at the D-Note in Olde Towne Arvada.

They've been playing together (and rooming together) for about six months, and are just getting started.  The band consists of a drummer (who moved from Pennsylvania to hook up with the start-up band), two guitars, and a bass player who is planning to be the lead singer.  I say "planning" because the entire set was instrumental; the band is still sort of in its "garage band-jam" phase, and haven't launched their vocals yet.

The 50-minute set was basically a jam session with a lot of weak spots.  It was apparent that the guys are a bit out of their element playing live on stage together (at least publicly), and have a lot of ground to cover.  But there are several things working in their favor:

  1. They aren't deluded about how good (or not-good) they are.  They know they are a band in the incubator, and they know what they need to do to improve.  Part of that growth involves getting out there and playing, and they have the courage to do just that.  (Good for them.)
  2. They do have a measure of raw talent--i.e., potential.  Iconoclass hasn't really gelled yet, don't really play as a band yet, but the musicians do have enough skill to learn and grow together.
  3. They have some good musical ideas.  Amid the garage-band jam, I heard some remarkable riffs, and sounds that captured my imagination. Some development of these ideas could make for a memorable sound.

All told, iconoClass gave a reasonable debut appearance.  With some hard work and perseverance...and some hard work (did we already say that?)...the potential is there for them to go places.  How far they go is, of course, up to them.

IconoClass has their next scheduled appearance at the Old Curtis Street Bar on January 7.  (They promised the D-Note audience there would be some vocals at the next event.)  Go check them out next month, and see what you think.
