New details have surfaced for the upcoming title, "Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag". These details come from an interview from IGN Live, that aired on this day, March 4, 2013. Prior to the broadcast, the reveal trailer was released on Ign.com. This trailer revealed the protagonist's name, Edward Kenway, and the fact that he is a pirate. It is also revealed that Blackbeard himself knows about Kenway, and he fears him. The final major detail released about the game from the trailer was the release date, which is confirmed to be Oct. 29, 2013.
The interview and live broadcast prior to the interview revealed quite a few new details. The time period and location will be the 18th century Caribbean. The developers are trying to avoid romanticizing pirates, giving the title a more gritty, realistic feel. The game will have three major cities, Havana, Nassau, and Kingston, and a large number (50+) of smaller, unique areas. Players will be able to jump from the ship to beaches, explore, and then return to the ship seamlessly.
The naval battles from "Assassin's Creed 3" will be returning, but will be fleshed out with more options and more upgrades to the system. The player will be able to carry 4 guns and 2 swords, which can be chained together in combos. The ocean will be a large part of the overworld, and will allow for a lot of exploration. There will be an underwater aspect to the game, possibly for exploration or treasure hunting. This title will have much more progression in Kenway's abilities, including upgrades to his hunting and harpooning skills.
The notoriety system has been removed, as it made no logical sense in this title. This title will have more open options when it comes to completing objectives, so players won't be required to use a specific method to finish a mission. The modern times scenario from previous titles will return, but it is not through Desmond's perspective. The player is the character in the modern times period, and that part of the game is designed to be from their perspective.
“Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag” is the newest entry in the long running “Assassin’s Creed” franchise, which began in 2007. The series has been known for reviving the action-stealth genre, and has been highly regarded by critics and players since its original release. The series has also been known for releasing new games every year (the only year that didn't receive a home console release since the series inception was 2008, although a portable game was released that year). Despite this, each entry brings something new to the gameplay, which keeps the series fresh. Also, the series has an overarching story, and more of the story is revealed in each title.
“Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag” is slated for release on Oct. 29, 2013 and will be available on Wii U, Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and "next-gen consoles." It will also be available on PC, but that release will likely be much later, like previous entries in the series. To learn more about “Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag”, visit the websites below:
