Ireland, Northern Ireland and some airports in Scotland were closed for several hours on Tuesday because of a new ash cloud from the Iceland volcano that never stopped erupting. Many airports re-open by early Tuesday afternoon.

Monday night, the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) imposed a no fly zone for Tuesday as the ash cloud drifted southward. Officials said that they cannot take the risk the lives of passengers from flying through the ash cloud.

"Ireland falls within the predicted area of ash concentrations that exceed acceptable engine manufacturer tolerance levels," said the IAA in a statement Monday.

"The decision is based on the safety risks to crews and passengers as a result of the drift south of the volcanic ash cloud caused by the north easterly winds."

It added that "over-flights of Ireland from the UK and Europe will not be impacted tomorrow. Flights in mainland Europe will operate normally".

A few weeks ago a volcanic eruption of Eyjafjallajokull in Iceland created a massive ash cloud. The volcano occurred below the glacial ice in Iceland and the cold water chilled the lava very quickly and created small pieces of glass that were carried up into the ash cloud, and grounded flights in and out of Europe for a week. The Eyjafjallajokull volcano never stopped spewing ash after it erupted.

Tuesday morning, flights from Salt Lake City International airport to Dublin and Shannon airports in Ireland were scheduled on time. But travelers to Ireland have been have urged customers to call the airline before heading to the airport.
