New art classes in Berkeley offer hands-on fun for kids with disabilities

UCP Foundations is offering a new art program for children with physical and cognitive disabilities. Held at the Live Oak Community Center in Berkeley, classes meet every other Thursday through December 15. A range of art projects (including eggshell picture frames and build-your-own-ocean) encourages kids to experiment with different textures and media. UCP Foundations is a program of United Cerebral Palsy of the Golden Gate.

UCP Creative Foundations Program Manager Kathy Wai wants participants to take pride in their artistic work. "It has been most enjoyable to work with the children and see them transform a simple piece of cardstock into beautiful and original creations that they are proud to share with others," says Wai. "Our partnership with UCP of the Golden Gate has been instrumental  in our success, and we're excited to expand our services and provide our kids the opportunity to explore their imagination and discover the artist they can become."
