Each year the amount of information released to the public regarding the dangers of dating violence grows. Organizations and media outlets inundate schools and parents with everything from warning signs to statistics, all wrapped up in neat little brochures in hopes to raise awareness of the growing epidemic however all to often it falls on deaf ears. Many teens and parents do not want to see the warning signs all around them because, as we all know, “it can’t happen to me.”
The Love is Not Abuse program was created by Liz Claiborne to provide information about dating abuse and teen. This year the program has made a launch into the digital age with the Love Is Not Abuse app. Aimed at parents who want to find out information on teen dating abuse and violence in the digital age, this app will provide information at the push of a button. The educational resource gives them a demonstration of the dangers, action steps, tips, and links to helpful services.
The free iPhone app was created by Liz Claiborne Inc., the women’s clothing brand that also works to end domestic violence. To demonstrate the dangers of digital dating abuse, it provides an interactive tool that allows parents to experience it first-hand. Text messages, emails and phone calls are received in real-time, to mimic the controlling and abusive behaviors teens may face in their relationships. Especially now with the prevalence of texting, emailing, Skype and GPS on phones teen dating violence can escalate at a more rapid pace.
Nothing can replace communication between parent and child however this app ensures that useful information from leading experts and organizations is drawn together in one easy-to-access place.
