There was only one big movie to come out this weekend and it was able to win at the box office. Two other movies were able to hit double digits but it’s been proven to be one of the slowest box offices this year. There hasn’t been that one movie that dominated the summer and even the big name movies that came out this summer were unable to live up to expectations.

The new movie to come out, Dawn of the Planet of Apes wins at the box office as it brings in an estimated $73 million for the first weekend. In the series, this is the highest box office opening in the series beating out 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes which only took in $54 million.

Dropping at the box office is Transformers: Age of Extinction which took in an estimated $16 million. The movie should be able to beat out it’s $210 million budget next week The movie has been gradually been declining at the box office and it’s 17% approval on Rotten Tomatoes could be why.

The other movie to hit double digits is Tammy with an estimated $12.9 million. 22 Jump Street and How to Train Your Dragon 2 round out the top five with an estimated $6.7 million and $5.8 million respectively.

It’s been a relatively slow box office this summer and it will remain so with only one or two big budget films coming out in August.
