Veraflox, a new antibiotic that its manufacturer describes as "superior" to other drugs, has received U.S. government approval for use in cats.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), based in Maryland, announced in the Federal Register on Dec. 31 that Bayer Animal Health is now permitted to sell Veraflox to U.S. veterinarians for feline care. The oral liquid, also known as pradofloxacin, is intended to treat skin infections, namely wounds and abscesses.
The FDA announcement is brief, but Bayer spokeswoman Staci Gouveia told Examiner.com Jan. 4 that there will be “additional details on Veraflox coming from Bayer this month.”
A Bayer website for the United Kingdom and Ireland says that field studies showed that Veraflox is "superior to other leading antibiotic products.” It describes the drug as "the first major advance in its class" since the introduction of Baytril more than 20 years ago, and asserts that "Veraflox provides vets with more predictability, reliability and peace of mind, especially in difficult-to-treat infections.”
