The embattled controversial Church of Scientology is facing yet another shocking scandal. Former members of the organization are bringing new allegations against the church involving famous member, Tom Cruise.
Fifteen ex-Scientologists have filed affidavits recently that allege Tom Cruise profited off the backs of church members for years. They claim parishioners were ordered to complete projects for Cruise such as home renovations, car repair and tasks that would normally be done by a personal assistant.
These ex-members of the Church of Scientology insist that they were told by the higher ups of the church organization that had had to do anything needed to keep the most prominent member, Cruise, happy.
Court records show that these affidavits were filed with the court on December 3 as part of the Monique Rathbun’s lawsuit against the Church of Scientology and leaded, David Miscavige.
Monique Rathbun is married to Marty Rathbun who is a former high ranking member of the church. In the lawsuit, Monique alleges that she and her husband have been “the targets of a systematic campaign of harassment and surveillance” at the behest of David Miscavige.
Former Sea Org member, John Brousseau claims he handled hundreds of hours of free work for Tom Cruise. In his affidavit, Brousseau stated, “In or around 2004, I was directed by Miscavige on several occasions to do specific projects relating to Tom Cruise.”
Brousseau revealed that one of the tasks were “a complete renovation of his home in Beverly Hills.” He also alleges that he had to assist with “a similar but smaller-scale overhaul” on Tom Cruise’s Telluride, Colorado home.
In his affidavit Brousseau wrote, “I was enlisted to oversee the construction of a large custom motor home for Mr. Cruise over a five month period.” A year later Brousseau attests that, “I was also enlisted at the direction of Miscavige to assist in the customization and construction of a special limousine for Tom Cruise.”
What was Brousseau paid for all the work he did for Tom Cruise? It worked out to approximately $1 per hour. The Church of Scientology as well as Tom Cruise dispute Brousseau’s claims stating that he was only a “consultant” on the projects.
According to Amy Scobee, a former high ranking Scientologist, she was forced to complete other tasks for Cruise. She wrote in her affidavit, “Miscavige’s assistant directed me on a project to locate Scientologists for Tom Cruise’s household to cover the positions of nanny, cook and maid. I was required to find Scientologists who could be counted upon to service Tom Cruise while remaining more loyal to the church.”
The court documents revealed that the church members who failed to follow Miscavige’s orders were subjected to brutal punishments in Scientology “gulags.” While kept in those “gulags”, court documents stated the church members were held in bamboo cages, forced to hand scrub sewage treatment systems, or splashed with icy cold water.
