Amdist Baltimore's soaring murder rate and beyond the saga of the city's socio-economic impasse, there lies a contingency of men and women committed to enhancing the lives of Baltimore youth. This article is the first of a series of articles in 2010 dedicated to showcasing "Ujima" (collective work and responsibility) in local Baltimore Neighborhoods.
Ujima in Action
The Preston Mitchum, Jr. (PMJ) Foundation is scheduled to expand its Career Awareness After-School Program to two new Baltimore schools today. If you aren't familiar with the PMJ Foundation, it is a Baltimore-based nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing the crippling effects of poverty and violence on at-risk youth in society. Founded in 2002, the PMJ Foundation seeks to educate, empower and provide a vision of a brighter future for youth through the implementation of year-round out-of school (OST) activities and community-based services, including after-school programs and back to school campaigns.
With funding from private donors and community-based organizations, the PMJ Foundation implements several community-based initiatives. The Career and Awareness After-School Project (CAP) is just one example. CAP is in its third year and has over 155 active students in participation.
