As the Vandals have learned time and time again this season, starting off good doesn’t always lead to success. It’s something they learned again very harshly Saturday as Nevada manhandled Idaho 56-3 in a one sided offense onslaught.
The Vandals started off the game in good shape, with their defense holding strong in the first quarter and their offense getting who shots at field goals, both of which failed. Still, despite a little of bit of struggle offensively, Idaho had held Nevada to seven points going into the second quarter. That is when things took a turn for the worse.
“The way things started,” said Coach Robb Akey, “I thought we’d have a chance. Then we didn’t get the stops made. We didn’t play well on offense.”
On the arm of QB Tyler Lantrip, Nevada dropped 21 points on the Vandals in the second quarter, all of which were the result of some great passing by the young quarterback, including a 63 yard pass to WR Aaron Bradley to start the quarter. Idaho was able to sneak in three points on a 19 yard field goal by K Trey Farquhar, but that was the last time the Vandals would see the scoreboard.
In total, Idaho would give up 587 yards of total offense to the Wolfpack, which included six passing touchdowns. The Vandals were barely lucky to have any offensive stats on the day. Both QB Brian Reader and QB Taylor Davis combined for a grand total of 178 yards passing with three total interceptions and no touchdowns.
These lackluster passing stats aren’t too surprising to those who have followed the team this year. Idaho has failed to score a touchdown through the air in six of their twelve games this year.
“We were moving the ball,” said RB Kama Bailey, who recorded 43 yards receiving and 26 yards rushing. “This is not how we wanted to go out.”
“I’m very disappointed in how we ended the season,” Akey said. “I don’t like the won-loss record. This is embarrassing to me.”
With the season now over, Coach Akey and company will return to Moscow and begin preparation for next year.
