Breaking into the world of fly fishing as a signature tier with companies like Orvis and Umpqua can be very tough. You might create something totally new or distinctive, but if it doesn't catch fish or get noticed, it may never see a fly line aside from your own. One way to gain notoriety and make a name for yourself as a fly tier is to prove yourself in something like the inaugural Nevada State Fly Tying Contest to be held in conjunction with the Nevada 150 Fair July 30- Aug. 4. Do you have something special up your sleeve?
The contest is the first of its kind at the fair in Carson City. The Carson City Fly Club is hosting the event which will feature all kinds of fly entries that must be submitted before the July 10 deadline. You have about 3 weeks to hit the vise for a great cause and a chance to show your tying skills. All award winning flies will be displayed at the fair and all flies submitted will be donated to the Nevada division of Reel Recovery. What a great way to have some fun, possible get noticed and help out a great charity.
The contest will feature three divisions including one for advanced tiers, intermediate creators and youth threaders with 20 fly categories to choose from. The categories have mandatory flies patterns and some have additional requirements entrants must follow. A three person panel consisting of a member from each of the three northern Nevada fly fishing clubs will determine the winning entries. Again, deadline for entries is July 10. Get busy.
