Neutral Sister Takes Center Stage at the 2010 Houston International Festival.

Neutral Sister Kyra Noons performing at iFest

No fog machine.
No elaborate lighting.
Nothing fancy.

It wasn’t needed.
The Houston International Festival’s Center Stage was erected over the Reflection Pool right in front of City Hall. It was a huge platform…and wet. A small, but generous amount of rain had poured from the sky right before the performance. But that was ok. The temperature outside was lowered and after the stage was cleaned off, the remaining water made for a glistening effect.
The Yard Band opened the show, followed by Mr. Blacc Sheep alongside two dancers. When it became time for Neutral Sister Kyra Noons to perform, she walked out with a purpose and her mighty presence filled the stage.
During the first part of her performance, Noons was flanked by two dancers. I loved how they let the music just flow through them. You felt a certain sense of peace. If they could, I believe the whole audience would have been onstage celebrating life alongside Noons. Her voice is strong and she sings with such raw emotion. She has pride in her heritage and womanhood. As Noons explained a bit about herself, she indicated to each flag that was displayed on the rear of the stage. Even though there was a huge crowd, Neutral Sister Noons created an intimate atmosphere.
We were also treated to a new song called “Reason” which will be on her next album. Performer and friend Mr. Blacc Sheep returned to the stage to sing “Hold On Haiti” with Noons.
It was an absolutely outstanding performance and one I won’t soon forget.

Neutral Sister Noons has invited me to her studio to talk more about her music and her passion for causes, so stay tuned! In the meantime, please check out the Neutral Sister website and Myspace page to hear more music. Click HERE to see the "Hold On Haiti" video.
