Neurosis had mind control over The Fonda Theatre (Photos)

Neurosis had heads bobbing and bodies weaving at The Fonda Theatre, on Jan. 4. Ides of Gemini and Savage Republic were the opening acts.

Scott Kelly and Steve von Till are the guitarists and vocalists, David Edwardson is the bassist, Noah Landis is the keyboardist and Jason Roeder is the drummer of Neurosis.

Before “Times Of Grace”, a stagehand walked between the stage and the barricade and requested everyone to refrain from using the flash of their cellular phones. A single spotlight shined above the stage, as von Till sang. The rest of the stage lights turned on, when the rest of Neurosis accompanied him. He walked over to Roeder’s drum set and strummed his guitar; they faced each other and continued to play their instruments. Before he walked back, von Till fed off the reverb of an amplifier.

Landis was accompanied by Roeder’s rapid strikes to his cymbal, for the introduction of “At The Well”. Every so often, von Till’s calm vocals chimed in. It intensified, when the rest of Neurosis complemented him.

Kelly went onto repeatedly sing, “In a shadow world, we hide in light.”
Sound effects kept the audience’s attention on the stage, as Neurosis went into “Left To Wander”.

Kelly sang the vocals of “Bleeding The Pigs”, after each strum of his guitar. Later, von Till sang after each time he played his guitar. Landis accompanied him, as he made sound effects with the keys of his keyboard. As the song continued on, Edwardson struck the chords of his bass as he extended it away from his body and over his head. The audience was caught in a trance and continued to slowly nod their head to the beat, as they had done prior.

Two sets of drums were placed on each side of Roeder’s drum set, before Neurosis ended the evening’s concert with “Through Silver In Blood”. As they struck the drums synchronically, von Till stood to the left side of Roeder. A special guest drummer later accompanied Roeder and von Till, as he struck the right set. They continued to strike their drum sets in perfect precision. Landis kept rocking back and forth the legs of his keyboard stand, as he continued to play.

“Distill (Watching The Swarm)”, “My Heart For Deliverance”, “At The End Of The Road”, “We All Rage In Gold”, and “Given To The Rising” were also part of Neurosis set.
