Why networking?: Networking is no longer only for the unemployed. The reality of today’s economy is one of volatility where “stability” for professionals means having an up-to-date skill set and a strong network to help you land quickly when the next transition happens.
This week’s networking tip: Most people find networking difficult because they feel like they are imposing on others. Instead of focusing on making a sale or getting a job, try going in with a bigger picture focus – learning more about prospective customer needs or about an industry you are targeting. A great goal for a networking meeting is to meet 3-5 new people (so you can do intentional follow up with each contact) and have good rapport with all of them when you leave! Sales professionals usually take a few calls to make a sale; meet someone a few times before you offer your services or ask for help. This “ask” preferably comes after you have built a relationship and helped them!
