Why networking?: Networking is no longer only for the unemployed. The reality of today’s economy is one of volatility where “stability” for professionals means having an up-to-date skill set and a strong network to help you land quickly when the next transition happens.
This week’s networking tip: A few years ago the “elevator pitch” became a must-have for networking, especially for job seekers. The idea behind the “pitch” was simple – what would you say if you were stuck in an elevator with someone who asked what you did and you only had 30 seconds? In real networking situations, however, an “elevator pitch” that is delivered as such can be awkward and hinder connection. As networking is all about the connection, the relationships built with others, think about toning down the pitch, asking more questions, and being more comfortable with a slower networking approach focused on relationship and connection first.
