The Nets are down to three active players with the last name Williams after learning that forward Shawne Williams needs foot surgery.
His timetable for return is unknown.
His foot is just one of a number of injuries he's currently battling. Williams also has a sore knee and a sprained shoulder.
Williams will undergo the surgery Wednesday and the Nets will then have a better idea of when he'll be able to return.
According to reports, the injury to Williams' left foot occurred prior to his signing with the Nets in December. He enjoyed a rebirth with the New York Knicks last season and parlayed his three-point success into a two-year deal from the Nets.
He is the fourth Net to undergo foot surgery this season. Brook Lopez luckily returned from his right foot fracture, but Keith Bogans and Damion James were not as fortunate. Their injuries cost them the rest of the 2011-12 season.
Williams endured a nightmarish season with the Nets prior to being sidelined with injuries.
Williams averaged 4.5 ppg on 28.6 percent shooting. He managed just 24.1 percent shooting from behind the arc. He shot 42.6 percent from three in New York last season.
His injury adds him to the list of recent small forward busts brought in by the Nets.
During their 12-70 season, Bobby Simmons was relegated to the bench. The Nets signed Travis Outlaw to a five-year, $35 million deal to bolster the position after trading Chris Douglas-Roberts. The team also moved on from Simmons.
After using the amnesty clause on Outlaw, Billy King signed Williams, although the market was pretty slim at the time.
Had Williams not been injured, he would likely not be in Avery Johnson's rotation. Anthony Morrow is the first swingman off the bench now that DeShawn Stevenson is starting because of his defensive abilities.
The operation will take place at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan.
