Nestle has removed pasta meals from the market in Italy and Spain. According to a Feb. 19 Yahoo! News report, the meals contain trace amounts of horse meat.
The meals were sold under the Buitoni brand. This development comes just days after Nestle, the biggest food company in the world, expressed certainty that its products were not impacted by the horse meat scandal sweeping across Europe.
DNA testing has revealed trace amounts of horse in the meat used to prepare the pasta dishes. A spokesman for the company said withdrawing the products from the market will not have a drastic financial impact on the company because the meals are perishable and thus not produced in mass quantity.
Buitoni beef ravioli and and beef tortellini are two of the products that have been pulled. Lasagnes à la Bolognaise Gourmandes, a catering product in France, is also believed to be tainted with horse meat.
