Nintendo is taking a page from their own history books for NES Remix 2. According to an April 10 press release, the upcoming game title will include a special Championship Mode inspired by the 1990 Nintendo World Championships.
The original 1990 NWC has gone on to become one of the most legendary pieces of Nintendo history as well as an early example of modern-day eSports competitions. The 30 city tour, eventually won by Thor Aackerlund, included the original Super Mario Bros., Rad Racer and Tetris. Official cartridges from that event are among the most valuable collectibles in all of video game console collecting.
The NES Remix 2 version of the contest goes full Mario. Like the original NWC contest, the first Super Mario Bros. game kicks off the Championship Mode. It is joined by Super Mario Bros. 3 and Dr. Mario, game titles that were actually used in the smaller 1991 follow up competitions entitled the Nintendo Campus Challenge and Nintendo Summer Challenge.
NES Remix 2 releases for the Nintendo Wii U on April 25.
