Nerve launches new dating site in L.A.

Are you a fan of Nerve.com? If so, you're in luck. Today the folks at Nerve are launching a brand new site for Angelenos called Nerve Dating - to help you meet each other in a more organic way rather than relying on the same old matching technology and algorithms you find on most dating sites.

It works kind of like this: you set up a basic profile (starting with only 140 characters - no long essays) and post pictures like you do with most sites. But instead of slugging through a list of questions to get matched with the people best suited for your "type," you get to chat with other members like you're at a party. You share your thoughts and opinions about restaurants, bars, movies, music, or anything else you've seen or done; then, you're instantly introduced to other people who did the same.

Nerve's CEO Sean Mills had this to say to me about the new site:

"We want to close the gap between people that don't know each other and want to meet based on their interests and their experiences. All dates start with a conversation, so that's where we are starting. We feel our approach is less gimmicky, which differentiates us from a lot of sites out there. We also have a large and successful online culture and lifestyle site tied to our dating site...and that guarantees a constant source of new users who are interested in the kinds of things that Nerve covers."

Nerve's creativity and vibe has always been appealing to me, so the launch of Nerve Dating seems like an interesting step in its evolution. I'm curious to see how L.A. daters respond, and if the launch might start a new trend for online dating.

"For most people, the challenge is less about figuring out whether you like someone, and more about starting that first conversation so you can meet more people," said Mills. "It can be really hard to walk across the room and start talking to someone you don't know. We wanted to make that easier, and to do it in a way that felt natural and casual instead of contrived."
