On Thursday, Municipal County Judge Robin Wernik barred convicted animal abuser Dathan Thompson of Neptune, N.J. from owning any animals during his lifetime reported the Asbury Park Press.

Thompson was found guilty of animal cruelty and failing to provide veterinary care for a ten-month-old puppy and a two-year-old female dog. The dogs, named "Petie" and "Baby Girl" were near death when rescued last November from Thompson's Oxonia Ave. home.

According to Victor 'Buddy' Amato, chief humane officer for the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), both dogs were extremely emaciated when discovered and required extensive veterinary treatment. A collar was embedded in the older dog's neck.

Thompson, 23, was fined $2,250.

"I'm angry that Thompson didn't get any jail time," stated MaryAnn Salzmann of Seaside Heights, N.J. "At least he is banned from doing this to another pet. I just wonder who is going to enforce the ban in the future? What was he thinking when he got to eat everyday? I think someone should starve him for awhile so he knows how awful it is to be hungry like these dogs were."

Both dogs have since gained substantial weight and have a list of potential adopters who are waiting to give these beautiful canines new homes.
