Nelson Van Alden (played by Michael Shannon) has had one crazy experience after another in “Boardwalk Empire.” From knocking up Lucy Danziger (Paz de la Huerta); to murdering Eric Sebso; and to living under a false name with his new wife, it’s no wonder a March 15 report from Federal Times called him one of the “worst feds” for film and/or television.
“Van Alden carries a thin veneer of piousness and faux-incorruptibility as he leads his crusade against Atlantic City bootlegger Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi), but it barely masks his true nature as an overly righteous psychopath,” writes Federal Times reporter Stephen Losey.
Losey also called Van Alden a “poor excuse for a G-man,” citing that the former federal agent has committed “many sins” over the course of the show’s three seasons. He also called him a “hypocrite” for giving a speech about how law enforcement officers are prohibited from accepting gifts – only to be shown returning home and hiding a stash of money he stole from an evidence bag.

Season four of “Boardwalk Empire” is currently in production and will air sometime in the fall of 2013.
