The world mourns the legendary and iconic life of Nelson Mandela,1918-2013. Mandela was more than a former South African President. He was more than a person imprisoned for 27 years, because of his opposition to apartheid. In South Africa apartheid was a policy or system of segregation or discrimination on grounds of race. The white minority controlled the black majority for years.

Madiba, is a clan name and the meaning is a a sign of respect and affection. South Africans referred to their leader as Madiba. Mandela was the prophet for all South Africans. Mandela even in prison was an advocate and visionary of revolutionary socialism. Mandela had a new vision for South African and a new belief to move the country to democracy and equality. Nelson Mandela was like a rock star, when he traveled the world. He was a household name that many remembered. From Mayor Kasim Reed, Ambassador Andrew Young in Atlanta to Pope Francis, Mandela was known, loved and respect.

About 80 percent of South Africans are of black African ancestry. The largest city is Johannesburg. Many languages are spoken in South Africa, 11 languages to date.
