Neil Young has announced details for a deluxe boxset release of his new studio album "A Letter Home." The legendary Canuck singer-songwriter surprised fans by dropping the 10-track covers album unannounced in vinyl format on April 18 just prior to Record Store Day.

According to a news release posted April 24 at Neil Young's official Facebook page, the upcoming limited edition set will include a CD, a download card, a making-of DVD, seven 6-inch clear vinyl discs and two 12-inch vinyl LPs. The boxset will be released on May 27 through Third Man and Reprise Records.

"A Letter Home" contains low-fi acoustic renditions of classic songs by a range of artists, including: Phil Ochs, Bob Dylan, Bert Jansch, Gordon Lightfoot, Tim Hardin, Willie Nelson, Ivory Joe Hunter, Bruce Springsteen and The Everly Brothers. The album was recorded at Jack White's Third Man Records (White is also featured on two tracks) on a refurbished 1947 Voice-O-Graph recording booth. ThirdManStore.com's website page describes the record as, "An unheard collection of rediscovered songs from the past recorded on ancient electro mechanical technology captures and unleashes the essence of something that could have been gone forever."

Boxset perks include both a standard 12" vinyl LP, as well as a "direct feed from the booth” audiophile 12” vinyl album along with seven 6-inch clear vinyl discs, each featuring two of the album tracks, with the seventh one containing a non-album version of Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind" and an alternative version of Willie Nelson's "Crazy." In addition, there will be a CD copy, as well as a download code for a digital Audiophile version, a DVD with footage of the recording sessions and a 32-page colour booklet.

The limited edition set will retail for $109.98, but a basic CD version will also be offered for $13.99. Fans can check out a video of Young in the studio performing Bert Jansch's "Needle of Death" at his official Youtube channel or preorder the set at NeilYoung.com.

The "Heart of Gold" hitmaker wrapped his solo acoustic tour with a two-night acoustic solo stand on April 21 and 22 at the historic Chicago Theatre. The two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer will take a two-month breather before heading overseas to team up with Crazy Horse for summer European tour, which begins in July.

Did you know? Neil Young's "A Letter Home" features Jack White on two tracks – vocals and piano on "On the Road Again" and "I Wonder If I Care as Much."
