Downtown Portland Restaurants-slide0
Tasty N Alder

Those looking for less touristy dining options when venturing around downtown Portland might want to check out these two inviting restaurants.

Located on the corner of 12th Avenue and Alder, this venue has a minimalist industrial look with a vibrant uptempo vibe. As this restaurant does not have wi-fi, this is more a place to dine and chat rather than sit and work on one's laptop or tablet. This restaurant specializes in good local organic and great tasting food that's multicultural but not too exotic. Their menu changes daily based on seasonal variations, local farmers' produce, and the kitchen crew's inspiration. In particular, check out their Bim Bop Bacon & Eggs made with bacon eggs, kimchi, carrots, bean sprouts, rice, and spinach. Pair this with the Alder Milk Punch that contains brandy, cold press coffee, cream, vanilla, and demarera. If one has room after this dish, try the chocolate potato donut with crème anglaise.

Tasty N Alder is open daily for brunch from 9am to 2pm with dinner starting Sunday to Thursday from 5:30pm to 10:00pm and Friday and Saturday from 5:30pm to 11pm. Also they have a Mid Day Bar Menu open daily from 2:00pm to 5:30pm. They are mostly a walk-in restaurant and reservations are limited to their communal table for parties of 7 to 10 people for dinner service. To make reservations, call them at 503-621-9251 between 9am to 10pm.

The flowery wall paper, chandeliers and mementoes of mothers dotting the walls give this downtown restaurant situated at 212 SW Stark Street a homey yet elegant feel. This restaurant specializes traditional homemade comfort fare like dumplings, stews and roasts from scratch and refines them with classical cooking techniques. These dishes contain fresh ingredients like Painted Hills beef, Carlton Farms pork and Pacific Northwest wild salmon. Some of their more popular items include wild salmon hash made with leeks, potatoes and a touch of cream served with two eggs any style; crunchy French toast which consists of thick slices of challah bread dipped in cornflakes and grilled golden brown; and their biscuit breakfast featuring homemade buttermilk biscuits topped with country sausage gravy and served with two eggs any style. Also, each month they feature a Mother of the Month (M.O.M) with some of her special dishes featured on their menu. Complement the meal with Mother's Blend coffee made with Stumptown coffee beans.

Mothers Bistro & Bar is open Tuesday to Sunday with breakfast served 7am to 2:30pm Tuesday to Friday and 8am to 2:30pm Saturday and Sunday. Lunch is from 11:30am to 2:30pm Tuesday to Sunday with dinner served from 5:30pm on Tuesday to Thursday and from 5pm on Friday and Saturday. Call 503-464-1122 for advance reservations between the hours of 8am and 9pm daily.

Retreat from the tourist traffic in Portland's Historic Old Town with this beer and cocktail oasis located at 329 NW Couch Street. Inside this nondescript exterior one finds a combination of gritty Old Town industrial aesthetic and the rustic feel of a 20th century country inn. The lively music with a R&B DJ provides a lively backdrop for those looking to socialize. Choose from one of their 15 or 16 seasonable draft beers or one of their signature cocktails. Those looking for a unique local taste can try a cocktail made with Aviation Gin crafted by Ryan Magarian, co-founder of Easy Company. A limited menu from Lardo's offers sandwiches and bar bites for those needing a bite to eat. The bar is open from 4:30pm to midnight Tuesday and Thursday and 4:30pm to 1:30am on Friday and Saturday.
