The Kansas City Chiefs have rocked the National Football League by virtually wrapping up the hiring of the biggest fish in the coaching pool, former Philadelphia Eagles head man, Andy Reid. Numerous insiders from multiple media sources say that Reid’s hiring could come as soon as Thursday night when a few minor details are worked out.
Kansas City is not usually one of the teams that makes waves in the league – either positively or negatively. But they seemingly came out of nowhere in the pursuit of Reid, who 24 hours earlier was reportedly a rock-solid lock to become the next head coach of the Arizona Cardinals.
However, Chiefs owner Clark Hunt led a contingent of front office members that met with Reid at a private airport in Philadelphia for nine hours. The meeting went so well and Reid was so pleased, that he has cancelled all his other scheduled meetings.
The details of what Reid and the Chiefs are still discussing aren’t known, but what is known is that Reid wants to bring his close friend and associate, former Cleveland Browns general manager, Tom Heckert with him. If that’s the case, it would appear that current Chiefs GM Scott Pioli would be out of a job.
It is widely accepted that Pioli and Reid could not co-exist since both men want the final say on personnel. Chiefs fans would vote for Reid in a landslide over the wildly-unpopular Pioli, whom they feel has driven the once-proud franchise into the gutter in just four years under his leadership.
Chiefs fans should celebrate in the streets if Reid end up here as the head coach. Despite a couple of bad seasons in Philly recently, this is one of the most accomplished coaches in the league over the last 14 years. Reid has gone to one Super Bowl and five NFC Championships while compiling the best win total (120), winning percentage (.609) and playoff victory total (10) in Philadelphia history. During Reid’s tenure, only Bill Belichick’s New England Patriots earned more championship game appearances (6) than Reid’s Eagles.
The Chiefs on the other hand, went through five head coaches, won 32 fewer games, had only three playoff appearances, and winning none of those games. In short, Chiefs fans will have a head coach that is possibly the most successful coach they have ever hired in club history.
