Section 2: K-W-L Model discussion about Negotiation, Mediation, and Arbitration
This lesson is on learning more about making Negotiation, Mediation, and Arbitration. Ask your students:
A. K questions – What do you KNOW about this topic?
B. W questions – What do you WANT TO KNOW about this topic?
A. Class will contrast and compare definitions of Negotiation, Mediation, and Arbitration.
Section 4: Negotiation role-play: A Negotiation between Stan and Susan
A. Students participate in scripted role-play called “A Negotiation between Stan and Susan.”
Story Description: This role-play called “A Negotiation between Stan and Susan” illustrates the six-steps of the Negotiation process.
Section 5: Mediation Vocabulary discussion for "Peer Mediation Role-Play between Marvin and Dan"
A. This discussion on the six steps of the Mediation process will prepare the class for the role-play called “Peer Mediation Role-Play between Marvin and Dan."
Section 6: Peer Mediation Role-Play between Marvin & Dan
A. Students participate in scripted role-play called “Peer Mediation Role-Play between Marvin & Dan.”
Story Description: Dan and his friends make fun of Marvin’s name. They wrongly accuse him of being gay. Marvin gets so frustrated that he signs up to go through a Peer Mediation session with Dan in the hopes that the name-calling and ridicule will stop.
Section 7: Role-Play Simulation: A Peer Mediation session between Stan and Susan
A. Students participate in scripted role-play called “Peer Mediation Session for Stan and Susan.”
Story Description: This role-play called “Peer Mediation Session for Stan and Susan” illustrates the six-steps of the Peer Mediation process.
Section 8: Create a Peer Mediation Role-Play using 1 of these 11 Ideas
A. Students divide into groups of 3 or 4. Each group will create a Peer Mediation role-play that can be acted out for the class using one of eleven ideas provided.
Section 9: Peer Mediation Role-Play: If You’re My Friend, Just Let It Be
A. Students participate in scripted role-play called “If You’re My Friend, Just Let It Be.”
Story Description: After a Peer Mediation session has concluded, the participants are cautioned to keep the session completely confidential. See what the two disputants do to get their friends from trying to get them to reveal what happened during the procedure.
Section 10: Bloom's Taxonomy Discussion Questions for If You’re My Friend, Just Let It Be
There are six levels in the Bloom's Taxonomy discussion question process. After reading "If You’re My Friend, Just Let It Be," the teacher will ask questions from all six levels.
Section 11: Wrap-Up Discussion for Unit on Negotiation, Mediation, & Arbitration
A. After participating in the following list of role-plays and activities, lead the class in this wrap-up discussion. This will give a good sense of closure to these concepts.
