Lady Antebellum fans are still riding the high after last night's Grammys, where Lady A snagged five out of their six nominations and went home with an armful of gold for their performance on Need You Now. This was surely a surreal night for Charles Kelley, Hillary Scott and Dave Haywood, having gone from being virtually unknown just before their debut album in 2007, to skyrocketing straight to the top of one of the biggest musical award shows and nearly sweeping their nominations just a few years later.
This is a huge win, not only for Lady A, but for the country music genre, as the group was up against such artists as Eminem, Jay-Z and Cee Lo Green. The St. Louis Country Music Examiner commented on the mass appeal of the song, Need You Now, in an earlier article, "Lady Antebellum Need You Now vies for Grammy Awards Record of the Year." It seems The Recording Academy voting members agreed.
Following is a list of awards that Lady Antebellum won at the 53rd annual Grammy Awards as they aired on KMOV St. Louis last night:
Best Country Performance By A Duo or Group With Vocals
Best Country Song
Best Country Album
Record of the Year
Song of the Year
The awards for Best Country Song and Song of the Year actually go to the songwriters, with Lady Antebellum collecting the rest. The only nomination they didn't win was the top spot, Album of the Year, but it's doubtful anyone in the group is shedding any tears over the one that got away. With such an overwhelming evening of hearing their name called again and again, it's more likely that Lady Antebellum is still trying to figure out if they dreamed the whole thing.
The enormous success of Need You Now up against so many other popular artists is truly an astonishing accomplishment for Lady A, but also a testament to their talent, hard work, and passion for not only their music, but for the fans who support them.
Unfortunately, St. Louis fans won't get to congratulate Lady A with applause at any local venues any time soon, but they can be sure that when they are able to make St. Louis a tour stop, fans here will remember. And when they do take that stage, we will greet them as they will now forever be known, the 2010 Grammys most recognized talent, and the group to whose success other Grammy hopeful, country music artists can now aspire.
Congratulations, Lady Antebellum, on your phenomenal success!
