Need to stop smoking? 36th Great American Smokeout – all things are possible!

Once a year a day is set aside to bring the awareness of the dangers of  smoking. Today is the 36th such day.   The CDC here in Atlanta joins with the American Cancer Society in bringing attention to this day once a year to help stamp out smoking.

The Atlanta CDC site gives information on smoking as well as the Atlanta Cancer Society.

Many people today who are addicted to using tobacco in any form (especially smoking), will say that they regret the day when they began.  The absolute best way to not to be captive (and in bondage to the addiction to tobacco products) is to exercise a commitment to never begin.

Parents who smoke are likely to have children who smoke.  Setting the example of “Do like I do.” rather than “Do like I say,” will go a long way in helping the next generation to be smoke free. Parents who smoke not only endanger their own health; but the health of their children as well. Parents may tell their children all day long not to smoke; but actions speak louder than words.

Just as a journey of a thousand miles begins with one step – a lifetime of addiction can begin with smoking one just one cigarette.

While it is the goal for the American Cancer Society to help prevent smoking (and to render aid to those already slaves to this unhealthy habit) everyday of the year, they choose one day a year to really bring out the emphasis on this national health problem.  For 36 years now they have designated a day called, “The Great American Smokeout.”  Today is that day.

Just as smokers began with that very first cigarette, they can begin to quit by putting down those cigarettes for just one day.  If successful, that one day can be the best day for your health and a longer life.

Cancer from smoking is one of the most preventable causes known to medical science. Making that decision today could add years to your life.

The ACS says:

“Quitting is hard, but you can increase your chances of success with help. The American Cancer Society can tell you about the steps you can take to quit smoking and provide the resources and support that can increase your chances of quitting successfully. To learn about the available tools, call the American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345.
