Back in the days before phones were “smart,” the batteries nestled within them would generally last all day. Back then, their screens were tiny, often monochrome, and did little but convey the most basic call or text information. Though it is almost inconceivable now, behind those screens was mostly telephony hardware, instead of a little power-hungry rectangular computer that happens to have a phone app built into it.
Since it’s quite likely that we’ll never be heading back to the days of the simple cell phone, many of us will need a little extra juice in our days to bring our phones (or any of the other gadgets we carry around with us) back from the dead. This is where a product like the Lenmar Helix comes in. This 11000mAh portable power pack can charge up to three mobile devices at the same time and is claimed to provide maximum charge efficiency simultaneously, charging the devices connected to it only as fast as the individual device allows.
The Helix is a handsome, understated rectangle of portable power pack goodness. The case consists mostly of matte black soft-touch material with a brightly contrasting band of chrome wrapped around its midsection. In this band are the three USB outputs and one Micro-USB input that make this thing work. The Micro-USB input is clearly marked “IN” and two of the USB outputs are marked “5V 1A MOBILE PHONE” with the other marked as “5V 2.4A TABLET.” Lenmar claims that the Helix will charge an iPhone up to four times, and it will bring an iPad back from the dead once, which is mighty handy.
