If the terrors of the unstable economy, polemic politicians and a very angry Mother Nature have you hiding under the covers, cheer up – it could always be worse. You, at least, are not under personal attack by mummies, vampires or werewolves.
In fact, a trip to the Tipping Point Theatre in Northville may be all you need to restore your spirits. There, you will undoubtedly see characters who really have something to worry about.
It all takes place on Hamstead Heath, at Mandacrest, the English estate of Lord Edgar and Lady Enid. The sound of baying wolves fills the manor, ghosts and vampires are lurking about, and an Egyptian mummy appears to have come back to life. On top of it all, Lord Edgar, who made Lady Enid his second wife, may not yet be over the death of his first wife, Irma Vep, who (of course) may not really be gone at all.
Yes … it’s a ridiculous thriller comedy, The Mystery of Irma Vep, written by Charles Ludlam and directed James R. Kuhl.
With its terrific cast, it is just the ticket for improving your personal mood.
The story’s fast-paced Gothic plot twists and surprise ending are played out entirely by two energetic quick-change actors, Brian P. Sage and Kevin Young.
‘It’s a non-stop comedy thriller, kind of like a Grimm’s Fairy Tale and the stories we all grew up with,’ Young said. ‘But it has a plot that you can follow to figure out what happened and what’s going to happen. It’s crazy and funny and a great show.’
Mr. Young should know -- he created a similar role for the Meadow Brook Theatre when he appeared as one of the clowns in ‘The 39 Steps.’ More recently, he received brilliant reviews for his role in Performance Network Theatre’s ‘Next Fall.’
Brian Sage is a Tipping Point favorite and veteran of several comedies, most recently ‘The Cocktail Hour.’
The Mystery of Irma Vep opens on September 1st and runs through October 9th.
The curtain rises at 8:00 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays, with matinees at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday and 2:00 p.m. on Sunday. The Tipping Point Theatre is located 361 E. Cady St. in Northville. This show opens the Tipping Point Theatre 2011-12 season, which also includes: The Importance of Being Earnest, from Nov. 13 to Dec. 18; The Love List, from Jan. 19 to Feb. 19; Fiction, from March 15 to April 15; and The Cemetery Club, from May 10 to June 17.
