The puppy that made national headlines when it was rescued from what would have surely been a deadly trip through the mail has gone home with a new owner.
Almost 50 people appeared at Minneapolis Animal Care and Control on Friday hoping to adopt the 5-month old schnauzer-poodle mix, named Guess. Animal control officials held a drawing to determine who would be the puppy's new owner. Minneapolis resident Terri Ford was the lucky winner after her name was drawn and she passed a pre-adoption screening application.
The puppy became famous after a Jan. 25 incident in which Loring Station postal workers heard noise coming from a package intended to be mailed from Minneapolis to Atlanta, Georgia. The sealed box was opened and the dog was discovered inside. The trip would have certainly killed the puppy. His former owner, 29-year-old Stacey Champion, was charged with animal cruelty for attempting to mail Guess to her son as a birthday present. The dog became city property after Champion failed to post bond last Monday.
Ford, who used to be a legal assistant but is currently unemployed, already has a black cat named Danvers, after the Mrs. Danvers character in the 1940s Alfred Hitchcock film "Rebecca." She wants to give the dog an "odd" new name, but hasn't decided what it will be. She expects him to get along well with her cat. Due to her work status, she believes she will have plenty of time to housebreak the young puppy.
Callers from around the state and the world inquired about adopting the puppy after the story hit the news. The attention that Guess' plight has generated for the shelter has helped other animals find homes. Ten pets were adopted just last week. Usually, only one or two animals per week are adopted at this time of year. Six of the animals left the shelter with new owners after Friday's drawing.
The MACC would like to remind potential adopters that it has many other dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets and other pets available for adoption. The Minneapolis shelter typically sees 3,500 pets arrive at the shelter every year.
