NE Mutiny joins Boston Breakers, Aztec MA in WPSL Elite

The New England Mutiny have joined the (former WPS) Boston Breakers and Aztec MA (formerly Boston Aztec) in the recently formed eight-team Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) Elite. Jerry Zanelli, founder of WPSL, had planned to launch his semi-pro division of the league in 2013, but bumped it up a year after the recent off-season collapse of the WPS.

The other former WPS team to join the WPSL Elite is 2011 WPS Champion Western New York Flash. The other WPSL Elite teams are WPSL Chicago Red Stars, Indiana FC, ASA Chesapeake Charge and the new Philadelphia Fury, which is not associated with Philadelphia Independence.

The WPSL Elite allows top American players to stay in form for the 2012 season during first division WPS litigation with former magicJack team owner, Dan Borislow. At this point, WPSL Elite  plans to expand on the West Coast in 2013 with four teams located in San Diego, Sacramento, Bay Area and Seattle. Click here for more information on the demise of WPS.

"This will be a monumental task and it will take the effort of the entire community to make it a success," said Mutiny owner Joe Ferrara. "If we want women's soccer to be around in the future then we all need to be a part of making that happen whether that comes from fans buying tickets, sponsorships through the business community or help from all the friends of soccer."

The WPSL is a national amateur women's soccer league with 73 teams throughout the United States. Click here for an interview with commissioner Zanelli about the WPSL.
