After the death of Ralph Waite on Thursday, February 13, 2014, many fans of "NCIS" questioned whether the series would pay its respects on screen to the man who portrayed Gibbs' father. Fans can rest assured, the series does have plans to honor the elder Gibbs.
In an interview with E! Online, a CBS spokesperson confirmed that "NCIS" writer and producer Gary Glasberg and the rest of the "NCIS" writing team are hard at work on a way to, "...honor both the memory of Ralph, as well as the character of Jackson Gibbs."
News of Waite's death came as a shock to most fans and to his costars, as well. "NCIS" costar Pauley Perrette (Abby Sciutto,) "Waltons" costar Mary McDonough (Erin Walton,) and "Bones" star David Boreanaz (Seeley Booth) took to Twitter to express their sadness at the star's passing. In addition, the cast and crew of "Bones," in which Waite was a recurring character, plans to honor the star by including an"In Memoriam" card for the late actor during an episode slated to air March 10th.
"NCIS" plans, tentatively, to honor the late star during the eleventh season finale.
