he NCAA hockey selections were announced on Sunday, and while Yale, the defending national champion, will not be in the field this year, it will be serving as a co-host for the NCAA Eastern Regional Tournament to be held this weekend at the Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport. Fairfield, which dropped hockey from its varsity athletic portfolio in 2003, is the other co-host.
The WBA also hosted the event in 2011 when Minnesota-Duluth stopped Yale en route to the national championship, and, most recently, 2012, when Union topped UMass-Lowell to advance to the Frozen Four.
The 2014 Bridgeport Regional Tournament promises to be a real treat for hockey fans as it will feature two teams from each of the East's power conferences—Hockey East and the ECAC.
On Friday, No. 1 seed Union, the ECAC's tournament champion, will square off against No. 4 Vermont of Hockey East. Union is currently ranked No. 2 in the country; Vermont is No. 16. First puck drops at 2 p.m.
Then, at 5:30, the tournament will take on some local flavor when Quinnipiac, located in nearby Hamden, takes on Providence College. The Bobcats, currently ranked No. 5 in the country, were last year's runners up, and spent much of last season as the top-ranked team in the nation. The Friars, meanwhile, are currently ranked ninth in the nation, and will be making their first NCAA postseason appearance since 2001.
Tickets are on sale at the Webster Bank Arena box office, and can also be purchased by clicking HERE. Friday's semifinal games will be televised on ESPNU, while Saturday's championship game will be on ESPN2. All games throughout the NCAA Div. 1 men's hockey tournament will be streamed on ESPN3/Watch ESPN.
The University of Minnesota Gophers, the nation's No. 1-ranked team, will be playing in the Western Regionals being held in St. Paul, Minn., while No. 2 Boston College will be playing in the Northeast Regionals, held in Worcester.
The winners of Friday's games advance to the Eastern Regional Finals on Saturday for the right to advance to the Frozen Four, this year being held at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia on April 10 and 12.
