The 2013 NCAA football season is underway and in South Bend, Indiana Notre Dame will begin their quest to get back to the BCS National Championship game tomorrow afternoon when they take on Temple. The game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. EST and can be seen streaming online or on TV via NBC.
After finishing last season at 12-0, the Irish stumbled in their quest for a perfect season and a National Championship falling 42-14 to Alabama, but the fan base has remained true towards the Irish.
According to an ABC57 report on Aug. 30, even some Temple fans are rooting for Notre Dame.
"I want to root for Temple, but Notre Dame has a chance to do more this year as far as the season goes, so I think I have to root for Notre Dame," said Temple student Jayson Loose.
The Irish and their fans know that last year doesn’t matter anymore and if they want to keep a high ranking and return to the BCS they can’t take Temple lightly. Temple has only beaten two ranked opponents in its history, against No. 14 Virginia Tech in 1998 and No. 16 Pittsburgh in 1987 – the Irish don’t want to be number three on that list.
Notre Dame QB Tommy Rees should have a good day vs. the Temple pass defense, who is a bit undersized compared to the Irish offense. Last season Temple was terrible against the pass. The Owls had the nation's sixth-worst pass efficiency defense and things, on paper at least, aren’t looking promising in their opener.
Temple QB Connor Reilly is making his first start and talk about a baptism by fire.
The Owls averaged the fifth-fewest passing yards on offense last year. Add that to a team that struggled on defense vs. the pass last season and this game could get ugly early. If the Irish want to make a run at the BCS Title again this season, they need to make a statement in this game.
