On Oct. 4 the Washington Post previewed this ACC meeting between two currently-undefeated and ranked foes. Both teams have started out 4-0, with Clemson winning two games in the conference. To get that big victory, the defensive will key in more on the rushing attack by FSU, rather than their phenom quarterback Jameis Winston and his passing. "Our basic defensive philosophy is stop the run, then make the team one-dimensional and play from there. That’s what we’re going to do. Load the box, stop the run, then try to be one-dimensional. The score of the game also helps that. Then we’ll be able to play the pass game from there."
Maryland's defense might be called impressive early on, as they're currently third overall in terms of points against, allowing just 10.3 per game. However, it should be noted their opponents were Florida International, Old Dominion and Connecticut in their first three games. A Sept. 21 shutout against West Virginia is a bit more noteworthy, but if they can keep FSU from scoring in bunches, that will certainly make more fans and analysts take notice of this team. In their 37-0 win against the Mountaineers, Maryland allowed just 178 yards total between rushing and receiving. Can they limit the Seminoles, as well?
Ironically, this FSU team currently is third overall in terms of points per game, averaging 51.3 a game. However, their first four opponents have been relatively soft, including Nevada, Bethune-Cook, Pittsburgh and Boston College. In effect this is the first big test for Florida State, and could even be a "look ahead" spot as they see No.3 Clemson on the schedule just two weeks from Saturday. Freshman QB Jameis Winston will look to continue to mature, as he's already thrown for 1,048 yards and twelve touchdowns on 67-for-91 passing. Will Winston be effective against the Maryland defense?
Odds makers have given the home team Seminoles a whopping edge to win this game, with a line of -16 1/2 to win. The over/under is set at 57 for many sports books as of this report, which seems to show little faith that Maryland will be able to contain their opponents in this matchup. Weather for the game is expected to be partly cloudy with a 40% change for showers or storms, and a kickoff temperature of around 80 degrees.
