CBS News reported a story about three police officers involved in killing a man possibly seeking help after an automobile accident. Early Saturday, three police officers had responded to a 911 call in Charlotte, NC around 2:30 a.m. A resident had called 911 after Jonathan Farrell, 24, had been knocking on the door possibly looking for help. Farrell was a former football player at Florida A&M University.
Although the details are sketchy, Farrell was tasered, shot and died at the scene. Allegedly, Farrell was killed after he ran at the officers. Officer Randall Merrick, 24, has been charged with voluntary manslaughter for shooting the unarmed victim.
Two other officers on the scene have been placed on paid administrative leave as the shooting is investigated.
Investigators located a wrecked car in an embankment that was possibly driven by Farrell. It’s believed he may have been involved in the accident and had knocked on a nearby door for help.
Merrick was arrested after police considered the shooting excessive. Read more about this story at the CBS website.
